The UAE golden visa is a pretty sought-after thing.

It basically lets you live in Dubai long-term, and getting one is easier than you might think.

At first, the visa was given to people who made big contributions to the country, had special skills, or worked in important industries.

But recently, it's become more accessible, and you might be eligible without even knowing it.

What is a UAE golden visa?

Having a UAE golden visa means you get to stay for 10 years. It's not tied to any employer, so no more constant visa renewals.

Golden visas let expats live, work, and study in the UAE without needing a national sponsor and allow full ownership of your business on the UAE mainland.

Who can apply for the golden visa?

The rules for golden visas are a bit different depending on whether you want to live in Dubai or elsewhere in the UAE.

In Dubai, there are six main groups who can apply for the UAE golden visa. These include:

  • Entrepreneurs

  • Humanitarian pioneers

  • Investors

  • Outstanding students and graduates

  • Specialised scientists

  • Talented geniuses

Plus, Dubai offers golden visas to teachers, nurses, gaming professionals, and notably, content creators.

1. Investors

Investors in four different categories can apply for a golden visa in Dubai: company investors, real estate investors, tax investors, and those making a significant bank deposit.

If you own a home in Dubai, real estate investors can get the UAE golden visa by buying a property worth at least Dhs2 million.

Property investors can qualify for the golden visa if the property's value is Dhs2 million or more, no matter its status. No minimum down payment is needed for the visa application. The property's value must be certified by a property status statement from the Dubai Land Department.

You might also qualify for a golden visa if you've made big public investments or are a partner in a UAE company. Investments need to be worth at least Dhs2 million, and investors need a valid trade license, company bank statement, tax registration, a free zone certificate, and any documents needed by the tax audit office.

Several UAE banks offer the incentive of a UAE golden visa if you deposit Dhs2 million with them. These banks include Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank, Ajman Bank, Al Maryah Community Bank, First Abu Dhabi Bank, and RAKBank. Deposits can also be in the form of a local bond or Sukuks.

Holders of the investor golden visa get a 10-year residence permit in Dubai.

The UAE has also said that cryptocurrency investors aren't eligible for the golden visa.

2. Entrepreneurs

Real estate entrepreneurs can apply for a UAE golden visa by meeting one or more of these conditions:

  • Nomination by the Dubai Future Foundation for a Dubai entrepreneurial golden visa

  • The entrepreneur must have a “pioneering project” registered with the Ministry of Economy or relevant authorities with an annual income of Dhs1 million

  • The entrepreneur must have a pioneering project with a business incubator or the Ministry of Economy, setting up a business in the UAE, with an income of Dhs2 million

  • The entrepreneur must have founded a pioneering project that was sold for no less than Dhs7 million

Service fees start with the residence permit fee of Dhs1,100, the fee inside the country is Dhs500, the Knowledge Dirham is Dhs10, and the Innovation Dirham is Dhs10. The issuance fee goes up by Dhs100 each year if the residency is more than two years.

The residency period is 10 years, as long as the entrepreneur meets the conditions.

3. Talented geniuses

People with exceptional talents, like inventors, innovators, and those in vital fields like culture, art, sports, and digital tech, can apply for a Dubai golden visa no matter their education, job status, salary, or professional level.

Global pioneers in culture and arts must meet certain criteria, like receiving a recognized global award, being nominated for a global award, getting a certificate of appreciation from a recognized global entity, or holding an honorary position in a recognized global entity due to outstanding creativity.

Locally or regionally prominent people in creative fields can also qualify. If they get a certificate of appreciation from a regional entity, are nominated for a recognized local or regional award, or hold an honorary position in a recognized local or regional entity as a creative, they could get a Dubai golden visa.

Distinguished practitioners also qualify for the golden visa if they can prove the following:

  • At least five years of professional experience in intellectual or creative production

  • Have published or distributed creative works within the last three years

  • Works must have received clear recognition from critics, the media, or specialized entities

  • Collaborated with well-known and prestigious entities, locally or internationally

  • Be a member of a prestigious international arts organization

Athletes need initial approval from a nominating authority before final approval by the GDRFA, according to regulations and requirements.

Dubai also plans to boost its economy with investment in the gaming sector, aiming to increase its GDP by Dhs3.6 billion by 2033 from gaming alone. If you're a gamer, find out more here about how you could qualify for a golden visa.

The visa requires a recommendation or approval from a federal or local government entity.

4. Scientists

Scientists and researchers with big achievements and influence in their field can apply for a golden visa if they get a recommendation from various authorities. These include:

  • Accomplished scientists and researchers: the Emirates Scientists Council

  • Senior scholars and religious leaders: Ministry of Culture and Youth or relevant local authorities

  • Elite fields of industry and the fourth industrial revolution: Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology or relevant local authorities

  • Elite health fields: Ministry of Health and Prevention or relevant local authorities

  • Elite education fields: Ministry of Education or relevant local authorities

Approval for each of these will be granted by the UAE’s Federal Identity Authority.

Skilled workers with a specialization at a higher professional level also fall under the “specialized scientists” category. These specialists need a valid employment contract or a salary certificate in the UAE, a monthly salary of at least Dhs30,000, a six-month bank statement of salary transfers, a certificate of academic achievement, and a license to practice the profession.

There are several rules including academic performance/cumulative grade average, year of graduation, and university ranking.

Students from top universities worldwide with a GPA of no less than 3.5 can apply for the golden visa. If you’re a student at an accredited university in the UAE, you’ll need a letter from your school stating your GPA is not less than 3.8.

High school students who have obtained an average rate of at least 95 percent in the high school certificate from public or private schools are also eligible. Those students’ families will also be included in the visa.

6. Humanitarian pioneers

A candidate for a golden visa who has been a pioneer in humanitarian work can fall under various criteria, like being an outstanding employee in a humanitarian organization or a humanitarian volunteer. A recommendation from the Ministry of Community Empowerment is needed in Dubai.

What benefits and perks do I get with the golden visa?

It's not just long-term residency that comes with a golden visa.

There are several benefits and perks not available to standard UAE residency visa holders.

These benefits include:

1. Extended residency rights

Golden residency holders and their dependents have a UAE residency visa for up to ten years, unlike a standard residency visa, which needs renewal every two to three years.

2. Self-sponsored work or stay

UAE golden visa holders can live, work, and study in the country for the duration of their visa, with or without local or other employment. They can work for themselves or another company (local or otherwise) without needing individual sponsorship. Unlike the standard residency visa, the UAE golden visa lets holders stay in the country long-term without employment.

3. Ability to sponsor family and unlimited domestic helpers

The UAE golden visa allows the holder to sponsor family members, including spouse and children (no matter the dependents’ age).

If the main holder of the UAE golden visa passes away during the ten-year visa term, their family members can stay on the visa until it naturally ends.

Holders of this visa type can also hire and support an unlimited number of domestic helpers. The UAE golden visa does not limit the number of employed and sponsored support.
