The government department led by Elon Musk is overseeing the management of "golden visas," which offer permanent residency in the United States to immigrants who pay $5 million, as reported by The New York Times on Wednesday.
U.S. President Donald Trump has previously introduced the "golden visa" (also known as the "golden card") as a residency permit for millionaires wishing to settle in the country, granting them the same privileges as those with the "green card."
According to the Times, which cites sources familiar with the situation and documents, Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has been responsible for developing the website and application process for the "golden visas" since at least last month.
DOGE employees
The report mentions three DOGE employees involved in the project: Marko Elez, a former SpaceX employee connected to an anonymous X account that posted racist remarks; Edward Coristine, an engineer dismissed from a company for leaking confidential information; and Joe Gebbia, one of Airbnb's founders.
These three engineers have been working with other agencies to find ways to "speed up the usual immigration screening process, which involves interviews and background checks, to secure residency approval for high-net-worth applicants within two weeks."
It is notable that DOGE is managing the "golden visa" system, as the department's official mission, tailored for Musk, is to reduce federal government spending to streamline bureaucracy, not to generate new revenue sources.
When he launched this initiative last February, Trump stated it "will attract many wealthy and successful individuals to our country, who will spend significantly, pay substantial taxes, and create numerous jobs. We believe it will be a great success," the president remarked.
